Top Aholics 2012

Hey AA members

I thought I'd look back and make a list of some of my favorite things from 2012.

Some of these items jumped right out at me, and other I had to think about. You'll notice a couple repeat offenders, I am an addict, and also some more recent trends and addictions.

These are in no particular order, but I did organize them (or attempt to) by category.
Click on the links to read/see more about it.

Fashion
Peplum (here and here)
Oxblood (here and here)
Prints (here, here, here, here and here)
Monochromatic outfits (here)
Studs and spikes (here, here, and here)

Studs and spikes have had real staying power these last couple of seasons. And I love it, they really toughen up a look. You can stud pretty much anything, collars, shoes, shorts, you name it. Here's a tutorial on studding shorts.

My most frequent attempts at a monochromatic look usually involved all black, but this winter I want to try all whites and of course other colors, but especially white. This also applies to prints. I've been really into matching prints, like with suits. That's a really easy way to achieve the look too.

Beauty
Vampy lips (here, here and a majority of my OOTD)
Afro/curly hair (here, here and here)
Ombre hair (with or with out colored ends)
Revlon photo ready concealers
Mario Bedsecu Drying Lotion (here, review to come)

I LOVE dark vampy lips. It's become one of my go to looks no matter the occasion. I recently fell in love with Black Cherry by Revlon (see here) and I have a tutorial with it coming soon. Until then here's an ombre vampy lip.

Revlon's photo ready concealers (I'm a color 006) are amazing. This is one of the few concealers that actually match my skin and covers my dark marks and blemishes plus it's really affordable. I use it every time I put on make, or just by itself for a more natural look. I've started using a lighter color for under my eyes when I'm really getting glammed up. MB's drying lotion is amazing I just apply it to a new pimple at night and it has reduced in size by the next day and gone on the 2nd day. LOVE it!

Ombre hair

Other
Instagram (here)
iPad(s) (here)
blogs
2012 election
DIY fashion (anything DIY) (here, here, here and here)

Blogs have been a fabulous source of information and inspiration. I love networking and just meeting new people via blogs and who themselves blog. It is a great form of self expression. Here are some that I frequent (Circle of Squares, BGLH, Dulce Candy, Style Pantry and CurlyNikki, for a full list check out the blogs that I follow here or click on my profile).

This year was the first year I actually followed the election somewhat closely. I watched the debates, read up on the issues etc. I knew who I wanted to win, and who I'd vote for if I could (one day, SOON). Politics became interesting too, albeit stressing at times. But it's good to be informed, especially on the local and state level. Voting is not an every 4 year thing, you have governors, mayors, representatives etc. Make sure you guys are doing your part!

DIYs!! I love them. They are great ways to save money and an outfit. I think I'm more into DIYs now that I started sewing (which helps with some of the projects). But you guys should definitely check out places like YouTube and Pinterest for ideas.

Honorable mentions
The Mayans being wrong (Epic Fail)
Crop tops (here)
Stiletto nails
Avengers (the movie)
Glitter

I know I'm not the only one happy that the world didn't end the 21st. But the Mayans were smart, they predicted the world would end, but died before anyone could question them about it. Stiletto nails just look really cool to me, despite not appearing functional or practical, in my opinion. I'd never get them but I enjoy looking at them and seeing different nail design on them.

Hope you guys enjoyed this post, because I enjoyed writing it.
What were some of your favorites this past year? Any of them on this list?
Comment and let me know.

What do you guys think of the name Aholics Anonymous (as opposed to Addicted Fembot)?

The content of this blog will not change just the web address, banner and little things like that.

It should be official by end of next week.

Suprises

Traditional weddings
Summer fun
Bliss

Oh how I love Saturdays. So yesterday was my friends graduation party and you already know how I feel about grad parties J. I had already made plans to go there at around midday but my mom wanted me to accompany her to a traditional wedding. See back home I had been to prolly one traditional wedding called the Cha-Wi (done by an older couple that already has kids: kind of renewing your vows in a traditional way). This one I attended on Saturday was for a newly wedded couple and it was quite interesting. I would take the time to explain to you guys but the detail is so much that I could write a book out of it so I’ll just give a brief explanation. Basically the bride’s family starts a “quarrel” with the groom’s family. They go back n forth with the groom’s family trying to console the bride’s family with gifts which range from money to expensive wine to palm wine and a whole bunch of nice words, appreciating the effort it took to raise the bride (this whole scene goes on for like 2hours, it’s quite fun to watch, like a live movie with unrehearsed lines). Then at the end the “problem/quarrel” is resolved between both families and the bride’s dad gives the newly wedded couple advice and blesses their marriage life. I did not get to my grad party till like 1am, but you know what it is, I still had fun for the remaining 3hours.lol
After partying till 4am and going to bed at 5am, waking up for church at 9am was super hard but I eventually woke up and got ready for church. Church was pretty awesome as we had a visiting pastor in my church. He encouraged us to be ready for Christ anytime and not to be fooled by the many people that have predicted dates that the rapture would occur (Harold Campign-diff story for diff day). But after church I went to two grad parties with a couple of friends. I had a lot of fun eating and doing a little bit of dancing as usual. I am totally sorry that I did not take pictures of my outfits on both days but the dress I wore to the grad parties on Sunday featured in my “FOR MY LOVE OF FASHION” entry. I’ll post an entry to show you how it looked like.

So what I wore looked like the pink dress, but it was deep blue. I matched it with a white cardigan and some orange sandals (tell me watchu know about color blocking, lol) but the combo was pretty good. Plain long dresses are def a trend this summer. Make it your own by adding a belt, over the shoulder purse and some huge hoops and u’re ready for a BLISSFUL day.

Chicago

So I spent the weekend in the Windy City [Friday-Sunday]. It was SO much fun, saw family, went shopping, out etc. Didn't really get a chance to sight see [next time], but what we did see was amazing. There's something about living in a place and never going to see the sights, I lived in the Chicago area for 6 years and never really went downtown and explored.
Any who the two clubs/parties we went to were Soundbar and The Shrine. The line for Soundbar was RIDICULOUS, but we were able to jump it <3 connections. The Shrine was super fun too, mad I missed out on the suya though [a kabob styled food].
I have yet to do a haul from my previous shopping trip so I'll just do a combined haul, not that I bought much.

I'm sad to say but I took very few pictures, WOMP. I don't know how it happened, especially because I brought my camera with me everywhere. No pictures of the sights, or family and friends and definitely not outfits [and I looked SUPER CUTE every day/night].

Top 5 AHOLICs [7]

My first set of "-aholics" this year, and they are

  1. Netflix
  2. Say Yes to the Dress
  3. Natural Hair Blogs
  4. Thrift Stores
  5. Carmex
The first was a no brainer, I went from 1 Month Free Trial to subscriber. I've always loved Netflix, because my family has been members since forever ago, when the packages were better and cheaper. But my boyfriend and I a couple months ago decided to sign-up for our own account.
I have watched countless movies and TV shows, discovered new faves and reconnected with old ones. All in all a GREAT investment, esp since I can watch it on my TV and on whatever mobile [Wi-fi enabled] device I'm on. I'd definitely recommend it, at least the free trial.
Two thumbs WAAAAAAAAY up.

Say Yes to the Dress, for those who don't know, is a TLC show about a high-end Bridal boutique in NY [Kleinfelds, where I've officially decided I will buy my wedding dress from]. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this show, I've come to the conclusion that I love everything wedding related.
This show is so addicting, I used to watch it on TV and get mad when I missed an episode or if a re-run came on. But now that I have Netflix I can watch all the seasons instantly AMAZING!

Natural Hair Blogs, well I'm natural so obviously reading them is a benefit to me. I can refer to these blogger for info on products, hair styles etc. all without have to inconvenience myself with the whole "trial and error" thing. It's fantastic, plus I meet a lot of new people on the blogs and interacting and learning about other peoples hair journeys is great.
Some that I read and follow faithfully

Number four, what more can I say. I love bargains, and some of the best places to find bargains are at Thrift stores. You can find great things from 80's jewelry, over-sized men's sweaters, vintage wedding dresses and REAL fur coats [sorry PETA] just to name a few. Check out my next haul post for some stuff I picked up recently. You can try:
  • GoodWill
  • Salvation Army
  • St Vincent de Paul [my personal fav]
  • Garage sales
  • and others

Seeing as it's winter, well sort of, dry lips are a problem for me. I hate having dry lips, I can never focus if my lips are chapped and Carmex has been my savior these past couple of weeks [I lost my Cherry Chapstick].
My lab partner told me that the reason Carmex was so addicting was because they put glass fibers into the chapstick preventing other lip balms from working. I'm a little skeptical but you never know these days.

What are some of your latest addictions? What do you think of mine?

-Aholic

7 months...

To say it's been a while would be an understatement. But I am back, and that's all I think matters, right? Right.
Any who I have LOTS to say and do so I'll jump right in...in the NEXT post. Lol, promise I'll be back though.
I'm looking to revamp my page [layout]. But it's been so long I don't know if I even still know how to do all of that.

Regardless, its good being back. Next post will be a haul [Target and Thrift store, which I might return too today].

Till later

Top 5 AHOLICs [6]

This is a post I started early Oct. Sorry it took so long to actually post it. The yellow is my current opinion. One year later!!! But I’m FINALLY going to finish this.
  • collaborations- k. a. o. s. party
  • oversized sweaters
  • Tyra’s antics ON America’s Next Top Model
  • UGGs [leapord print]
  • dark wash skinny jeans
So later this month the four active black frats [kappas, alphas, omegas and sigmas] on campus will be collaborating to have a party. And it’s gonna be that DEAL. I can already see it now. I’m looking for a dress as we speak. I want to look good, good enough to eat. I’ve found some potentials but we’ll see. Anyway the idea of all of them coming together is VERY appealing. Imagine all that chocolate fineness in one location! YEP, mouth watering isn’t it. Like being a kid in the candy story if you will. But aside for that OBVIOUS benefit it will provide an escape for the hum drum life of classes and homework on the daily….Lets just say that party was completely BOGUS. Man talk about EPIC FAIL. The farts sold HELLA tickets but a fraction of the people could actually get INTO the venue. They didn’t refund money and the police ended up tasing people, pepper spraying everyone and arresting one or two people. It was CRAZY. I was upset. The upside is that no one saw my dress, so I can wear it to another party. And trust me i was lookin tasty lmao. Woot, anyway that’s all behind us now.

Oversized sweats
Love them. they have a certain 80’s style/feel to them, esp when pair with the right accessories and skinnies. because of their large size they’re extra comfy and warm, and cute.

Tyra Banks, man I love this woman, she is crazy though. I’m sure you’ve seen her on ANTM. Can’t say much about her, because she’s is so unique. I’ve heard people say she’s the next Oprah, but that’s hard to say. Never really agreed with the comparison of “greats”. Oprah and Tyra are different people entirely, their impacts of audiences is different as the Audiences that they attract. Mad love for the both of them though, and who knows where Tyra will be in the future now that Oprah is “retiring” [only to create MORE work for herself, congrats though].

Uggs, Uggly…watever you want to call them. You love em or you hate em. And I USED to hate them. Now I can’t get enough of my own. They are SO comfortable && they keep your feet warm. I won’t say that they go with EVERYTHING…but IF you wanted to wear them with everything you could.

Dark wash skinnies. Do I have to say much about this? STAPLE! They are the ONLY type of jeans that I wear. [I’m more of a leggings kinda girls]. But dark wash skinnies are lovely, and so versatile, [to a greater extent than Uggs].

I got a pickle…

Just been reminiscing about my long gone youth. LOL. At the ripe old age of 20 I'm a self-inflicted geriatric. SOO sad. That saying that “the youth is wasted on the young”, well I’m pretty sure it was directed at me.
But anyway the past two weekends have been pretty uneventful, and this one doesn't look any better. A party Friday [still on the back burner really] and gettin braids Saturday are the only highlights. The days will be filled with OChem and my nights, my DAT practice/review book. FUN. C’est la Vie [does any one remember that song  by B*witched] but yeah.
On the bright side the week is almost over. And the Party of the year is coming up next weekend so that’s good.
Top 5 Aholics’ list is coming up, I’ve just been kinda lazy lately, sorry. And my room is still not clean so no blog bout that yet :(.
I’m out, gotta go eat before my ASL class.

grains of sand

So for some reason high school went by extra slow, but now that I'm in college I feel as though it's passed me. I went to sleep a freshman and some how woke up a junior. School started the 8th and already two weeks from now I have an Organic Chemistry test (the room is spinning! like I feel ultra dizzy, I'll try and ignore it.). Anyway where has all this time gone? I don't know.

Not that any of that is any excuse to not keep up with blogging. I'll do better. Weekends are definitely more open, dispite my constant attempts to study O Chem (the BANE of my existence)!!
Any who I'll be taking pictures of my room (I just got a poster...it's HUGE, so I'm motivated) and posting them.

I've been good otherwise and settling in. There's an Alpha (Black Frat) party tonight that two of my close friends and I are going to, as well as a party tomorrow that we'll all be attending. It should be fun. I'm excited, anything to take my mind off of sulfides/thioethers and the acid catalyzed ring opening of epoxides. Just typing that gave me a headache (bright side the room is no longer spinning).

Anyway I'm gonna continue to study before my ASA board meeting (African Student Association).

Catch ya on the flip side.

a.FAIR with a Sexpot

Went to the fair today with a hometown buddy. I had fun. We won a goldfish and named him Sexpot [after me ;)]. He’s of mix decent, cuz she’s white and I'm black, but he’s a trooper and he’ll adjust well to his new environment. He already has to brothers Spike and Silver, so he won’t be lonely. I love that I’m talking about him, not even sure the gender, like he is really actually thinking these things.

Anyway fair food is amazing [-ly overpriced], I had funnel cake [YUM], freshly cut fries and gyros [first time].

Me and Lil Saint [my friend] got heckled by the carnival workers to play the games. At THOSE prices [naw], plus i didn’t bring that much cash because I didn’t want to waste it at the fair [that and I dropped nearly $125 on clothes from forever21.com earlier today]

  • food is great [though expensive]
  • games are ok
  • stay away from rides [I”m afraid of heights]
  • carnies are kinda scary

Over all I had an a good time. Looked good and bonded wit my girl Lil Saint and G-Baby [me] 4 life. <= If you’ve seen Hardball and You Got Served you’ll know who those people are.

don’t worry, be happy…

So ya’ll are probably like DANG this girl is STILL up…yeah…I know!

Blogger is on my –AHOLICs list, same with Twitter and Facebook all of which are demanding my attention at 3AM.

But this is just a short post.

faceI didn’t want my only Sept posts so far to be so negative, not that the first one was. But I did complain a lot in it. [It’s Face from Nick Jr ==>]

Don’t expect a lot, if any more post like “I refuse to RIDE jocks…” that was just me reacting to various things I guess. I’m not “mad” at anyone or whatever. Just find the way things [often by the media] are perpetuated to be uncalled for and disheartening. Has anyone ever seen the movie Paparazzi? Watch it. Yeah it’s all very unfortunate.

There are more important things in life, and yeah, my blog might be right there with all other superficial things, but this is just for fun. I have other passions, concerns etc [I’ll do a blog about some eventually].

I don’t know. Thought I’d get that off my chest. I’ve been doing a lot of unloading (lmao).

smile-monkyI was going to include a picture of someone pooping, but it would be too vulgar and just plain GROSS. Then I thought about pix of the paparazzi, and I found it funny that there are so many pictures of the THEM, lol.

“dropping some brown friends off as sea” <= LMAO, not really, thought it was funny and appropriate for the situation (if you don’t get it means TAKING A DUMP, POOPING, TAKING A DOOKIE, SH*TING)

-A

I refuse to RIDE jocks…

I'm not jumping on any kind of bandwagon thanks, you can go to the next stop with that one.

This is not to say that I don’t really like anyone/styles [Pink, Keri Hilson, lil Wayne, Beyonce, Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, Marc Jacobs, 80’s etc etc] and obviously this is a blog about obsessions. BUT I am not obsessing over, addicted to, hating, loathing [or whatever] something just because everybody and they mama is doing the same thing. Not to say that some of my topics wont’ coincide wit fads, songs etc that are current BUT that’s not what it’s ALL going to be about. *I’m not saying it’s wrong to do jock or anything, it’s part of what people do, they see something and they react, and sometimes it the same reaction across the board. I’m just going to shy away from it, or keep it on the low.

My blog is going to be as chill and non controversial as it gets. WHY? Because that’s the kind of person that I am, i have my opinions on things, but I also like I spoke about in a previous blog refuse to shove my ideals onto others [see Urge to Regurge]  . That ship doesn’t dock here, sorry. I’m not going to force anyone to like or dislike anything, just going to say how I feel about it and be done with it.

I’m not going to board the Rihanna loving, or Cassie hating train, thanks but no thanks. I didn’t like or dislike either of them and I'm still just as apathetic as I was before.

I will also NOT be carpooling with the Chris Brown haters. This might upset a lot of people. But, just un-FOLLOW this is my blog if it offends you that much. He is a human, just like the rest of us, he makes mistakes and isn’t perfect. He also apologized, which is good, so unless another body surfaces then people need to get off his neck.

Wasn’t Michael's molestation charges overlooked TWICE? Just asking, not that I believe or disbelieve [is that a word?] he did it the first or any other times.

Didn’t R. Kelly have a sex scandal with a 14 year old?

President Clinton…”I did not have sexual relations with that woman”.

Not to mention the NUMOUROUS sex tapes that LITTER the internet [Paris, Ray J, Kim Kardashian, Raven].

Not that those are all in the category as the beating, BUT they are all mistakes that these PEOPLE [they are people first THEN celebrities] made.

Chris has the misfortune of being in the spot light, what he did was wrong. there’s no if, ands, or buts about that. I won’t argue against that. Obviously, but he is not the ONLY person to do wrong, he just happens to be one of few who’s mistakes are broadcast across the world and has repercussions to a greater magnitude than say Joe Shomoe who raped and murdered Jane Doe.

Look at me still up at 2AM. Need to sleep.

hasta la vista [baby ;)]

Just another MANIC Monday, no Tue, ACTUALLY Wed…

Well quite obviously I’m confused and tired. Slept late last night, around 3 or something I don’t really remember. This morning woke up at 5AM to drive to Minneapolis to help my lil bro move into his dorm, he’s a freshman at the U of M [where I go as well]. Man it was a long day, my mom and I pretty much set up his whole room while he had to go do some freshman stuff.

It wasn’t the set-up that got to me, it was the shopping afterwards. And I know you’re all probably gasping at those “blasphemous” words [esp as an –AHOLIC] but this wasn’t any kind of shopping, this was apartment shopping with my MOTHER. UGH. Not only was she being her usual nit-picky, thinks she knows what “kids” my age want self, I also had to deal with my FRICKEN period [somebody ripe out my WOMB please], lower back pains, sore feet and not to mention the tiredness. GEEZ. My friends and I like to joke about how OLD we are getting and feeling. But I honestly feel more than a little geriatric (aka old) sometimes. I was folding some clothes on the floor and both of my knees and my back cracked EXTRA loud and painfully just from the effort of getting up.

Well I’ll quite my belly-aching, no worries. Anyways I’m happy with the stuff that I picked up today, still need A LOT more stuff though. I’ll defiantly take pix of my room & bathroom once it’s set up, who knows when that’ll be though.

I’m blogging from my new laptop! I’m so happy. I’ve had my previous one since junior year in high school [Christmas gift 2006]. But it was definitely time for an upgrade [thank you Daddy].

I don’t really want this post to turn into a diary entry, but I just feel like telling ya’ll about every minute detail of my day. I’ll fortunately refrain. I got back home an hour ago [12:30AM] it’s a 3 hour drive to the Cities [Minneapolis & St Paul] from where I live in lil’ ol’ WissCANsen [where the REAL happy cows are from.] UGH won’t even go into the drive home, which luckily I was able to sleep the majority of, with a stiff neck to show for it.

But let me not bore you with my complaints.

I’m probably going to sleep now, or read till I fall asleep. [Reading is definitely on the –AHOLICs list, I’m an AVID reader, of romances, all things Janet Evanovich, mystery, anthropological, fashion, gossip etc etc].

“Good night, good night! Parting is such sweet sorrow,

That I shall say good night till it be morrow.”

Weddings, Weaves & Walking

I'm a big fan of the Style network, Oxygen and channels like that. I love watching all the wedding oriented shows. It gets me excited for MY big day, although I'm no where near getting married yet. That doesn't stop me from getting ideas, and watching others on their special days.

  • Who's Wedding Is It Anyway
  • Bridzillas
  • Wedding Makeover
  • Masters of Reception
  • Say Yes to the Dress (TLC)
  • Platinum Weddings
  • any shows bout [wedding] cakes or other elaborate cake

For the most part everyone make a beautiful bride, but then you might run across some people that are truly unfortunate. Not really that they aren't attractive, but that doesn't help matters. I don't think I can properly describe what I mean without having you see a clip of the shows that I've seen. But either way, brides are beauties and the grooms aren't half bad themselves. There's just something about weddings that touches my heart. I guess despite being so "tough" and cold and unfeeling as I claim deep deep deep DEEP down I'm just a softie <3 [yeah right].

frofem

BEFORE [hott]        AFTER [just as hott]

Weaves, I'm only going to touch lightly on this subject, only because you saw a little of my opinion on them in my previous post. I enjoy weaves. I just recently started getting them, I tend to favor braids and kinky twists, but one of my BEST friends does it for me so when I'm in between those styles she hooks me up. I've only really done straight and long weaves, but I want to try shorter ones and even curly.

So remember in my first "anti"-aholic list how I included lists with less than three items. Well walking was how I completed this list because otherwise it would've seriously bugged me, plus I enjoyed the alliteration I'd created in the title. I struggled to come up with a third "W" word that I had been recently enjoying. Luckily I had my brother on had for that one. As a college student walking is an essential to getting by, literally. To get to class, or even the bus if you detest bipedal motion, etc. Being a lazy bum the only [well one of the only ;)] form of exercise I get is from walk/jogging/speed walking to class or the bus. And I've actually come to miss it this past summer, where I've been more lazy than usually (hard to believe I know).

I love how a seemingly random choice of words can turn into a ridiculously long post...but it is the "RAMBLINGS of a self-profess -AHOLIC" and not the "short, sweet and concise musing of a brainiac"

Adieu mes amies [good bye my friends-french]

Queen B

BeyonceBeyonce!

Love her, or hate her, she's still one of the baddest, most diva-lious women in the business. Did I mention her music is amazing.

Took a quick trip to Wally World [Wal-mart] to get some hair products and got my diva on wit her highness. Gettin it wit Dangerously in Love, Diva, Check On It, Yes, Single Ladies. Man so many good songs. I've been listening to just her songs for the past week and I've not only come to the obvious conclusion that she's more amazing that I thought, but also that I want NEED to go to one of her concerts.

Glad the queen found herself a good king too, so many celebs are in romantic funks, break up after break up. I feel bad for them love's tough.

But back to Beyonce "Mrs Hova Diva" Knowles/Sasha Fierce. I LOVE LOVE LOVE her last album [I am Sasha Fierce], it was hot, banging, stellar, rad, cool, whatever lingo you want to use. Because basically it was that DEAL.

Sweet Dream- Listen

If you haven't heard the album, sorry to say you're not only missing out, but seriously behind the times. It released early this year and did well. The whole cd bangs [is good], for me there aren't too may cd's that I like all or a majority of the songs, this, last summer's Tha Carter III, and Kelly Clackson's Breakaway album were some of them.

Oh and people hating on her acting ability. I'd like to see you do better, and even if you can [which I seriously doubt] you'd still never do it like B. Not saying she's the best, but she's not as bad as Paris Hilton in House of Wax [THAT was bad]. Still need to see Obsessed!

On a side note, does anyone else miss Destiny's Child? I do :( actually I miss a lot of 90's girl bands. Where have they gone? Girl bands in general? Everyone seems destinysChildto busy trying to do THEMSELVES and be solo that there's no time for harmonizing. What happened to Danity Kane? Pussycat Dolls [not that I liked them, just an example]? What's sad is that I can't name anymore, because I don't know anymore.

I have nothing against boy band, or mixed groups, or solo artists, and I'm not implying that only girl groups empowered women, independence, sexuality and all that other good stuff. BUT there was just something FUN about being wit your friends and choosing a girl to be and lip sync etc, think SPICE GIRLS. I don't know, I guess I'm just weird like that.
